About East Sudbury
William Billings was a leading figure of early American psalmody. This SATB setting of Laudate Dominum is a powerful exultation, the Latin text calling all creation to praise the Lord. The ecstatic Alleluja opens the work, setting the tone for a robust and joyful declaration of divine power. Billings’s characteristic directness and vigorous harmonies are evident throughout, making this a stirring anthem for a choir that enjoys robust, celebratory sacred music. The extended Latin text, drawn from Psalm 148, enumerates heavenly bodies, angels, earthly elements, and creatures, all united in a grand chorus of praise.
