E viver e morire - Scherzi d'amanti by Giovanni Stefani — Lyrics
E viver e morire,
mi fai quando di veggio faccia bela,
ma non si puo soffrire.
Quando mi vedi, mi ridi, mi fuggi, mi struggi, mi privi d'adire,
e poi mi dai martire,
quando fingendo, correndo, ridendo,
mi dici pian, piano, core mio bello, baciovi la mano.
Con quanta leggiadria,
m'acceni con la man, e poi t'asconi, dolce nemica mia.
Perche si presta, si destra, si bella, si fella,
si sto vai via per darmi gelosia,
poi ritornando, guardando, bruciando,
mi dici pian, piano, core mio bello, baciovi la mano.

About E viver e morire - Scherzi d'amanti
This is a secular Italian madrigal for solo voice. The text paints a vivid picture of unrequited love, exploring the conflicting emotions of desire and despair. The lover pleads with their beloved, who alternates between playful avoidance and tender gestures. The music reflects this push-and-pull, with moments of passionate intensity countered by delicate fragility. The solo voice must capture the drama of the text, moving from desperate appeals to moments of sweet, almost whispered, affection, all within the expressive language of the Italian Renaissance madrigal.
