Barbara Strozzi was one of the most prolific and celebrated composers of the Venetian Baroque. This aria, E pazzi il mio core, is a striking example of her secular vocal output. Scored for solo soprano, the text, written in Italian, vividly portrays a heart consumed by passionate and contradictory emotions. It describes a mind in a state of frenzy, oscillating between rage, sighs, lamentations, and delirium, all driven by unrequited love and disdain. The lyrics explore the torment of devotion to an unfeeling object, with the heart bound by love's chains. The soprano voice is called upon to express this complex inner turmoil, moving from laughter to tears, from longing for death to scorn, ultimately highlighting the folly of such enduring, self-inflicted suffering.
