Dux Michael by Daniel Friderici — Lyrics
About Dux Michael
This motet for two-part women's voices is an example of sacred German Baroque part-music. The Latin text addresses Saint Michael as a leader and protector, described as being equal to God and always standing for his people. The composer Daniel Friderici was active in the early 17th century. Such motets were often sung in Lutheran churches in Germany, serving as settings of biblical or liturgical texts. The intimate voicing of SS is well-suited to smaller church choirs or for performance in a more domestic devotional setting. The piece would fit well within a service on Michaelmas or at other times when the role of spiritual leadership and defence is contemplated.
