And broke the fold of God,

But all the downward road.
How dreadful was the hour
When God our wand'rings laid,
And did at once his vengeance pour,

William Billings' Dublin sets a profound theological text exploring humanity's straying from God's path and the redemptive sacrifice of Christ. The lyrics describe the flock's wandering, the terrible hour of God's vengeance poured upon the Shepherd, and the glorious grace of Christ's atonement, where his life and blood are paid as a ransom.
