Oratio Moysi, hominis Dei. Domine, refugium factus es nobis a generatione in generationem.
Priusquam montes fierent, aut formaretur terra et orbis,
a saeculo et usque in saeculum tu es, Deus.
Ne avertas hominem in humilitatem: et dixisti: Convertimini, filii hominum.
Quoniam mille anni ante oculos tuos tamquam dies hesterna quae praeteriit: et custodia in nocte

Edward John Hopkins' Double chant in C major is a setting for SATB choir of a Latin text, the Oratio Moysi, also known as Psalm 90. The text speaks of God's eternal nature, contrasting it with the transience of human life, and pleads for divine mercy. Beginning with the assertion of God's refuge for humanity from generation to generation, it moves to a meditation on the brevity of life, which passes like grass in the field, and acknowledges human frailty and sin before God. The composer’s setting, in the tradition of Anglican chants, provides a structure for the continuous recitation of the psalm verses, offering a contemplative musical frame for this profound biblical prayer.
