Dostoino est by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — Lyrics
About Dostoino est
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Dostoino est is a powerful sacred anthem for unaccompanied SATBB choir, sung in Church Slavonic. The text is a traditional Orthodox Marian antiphon, expressing profound reverence for the Mother of God. It extols her as more honorable than the Cherubim and more glorious than the Seraphim, and blesses her as the one who without corruption gave birth to the Word of God, the true Mother of God. Tchaikovsky's setting captures the spiritual depth and majestic grandeur of the ancient text, creating an atmosphere of awe and veneration. The rich SATBB harmonies provide a full and resonant sound, ideal for conveying the profound theological statements within the lyrics. This work is a significant example of Russian sacred choral music.
