Dont vient cela by Thomas Crecquillon — Lyrics
About Dont vient cela
The singer asks his beloved why she no longer shows him favour. He laments that he will be filled with sadness until she tells him the truth. He suspects she no longer wants him as a lover, or that bad rumours have reached her, or that she has found a new love. If she has abandoned love, her beauty will become a prison. If she has forgotten him for another, God grant her the success she seeks. But if she wrongly suspects him of anything, he insists that she should be as cruel to him as she is beautiful. Thomas Crecquillon’s chanson is here presented for SSATB voices in its original French, a fine example of secular part-music from the Renaissance.
