Donna cinta di ferro by Andrea Gabrieli — Lyrics
Donna cinta di ferro e di diamante
che dando a crudeltà nome d'onore,
neghi quel che per me ti chied'Amore
per giusto premio di mie pene tante.
L'esser cortese a un suo fidel amante,
donar se stessa a chi le dona il core
opra è d'alma gentile, e non errore
si come stima il cieco vulgo errante.

About Donna cinta di ferro
Andrea Gabrieli's Donna cinta di ferro is a secular Italian madrigal for SAATTB voices. It explores the themes of unrequited love and the singer's plea for reciprocity, contrasting the beloved's cruel 'honour' with the true nobility of kindness to a faithful lover. The text paints a vivid picture of longing, culminating in a desire for a sweet death embraced by the object of affection. This piece, suitable for an intimate setting, demands sensitive interpretation to convey its blend of passionate yearning and elegant Renaissance style.
