Domini est terra by Jacob Handl — Lyrics

Prima sabbati. Psalmus David. Domini est terra, et plenitudo ejus; orbis terrarum, et universi qui habitant in eo. Quia ipse super maria fundavit eum, et super flumina praeparavit eum. Quis ascendet in montem Domini? aut quis stabit in loco sancto ejus? Innocens manibus et mundo corde, qui non accepit in vano animam suam, nec juravit in dolo proximo suo: hic accipiet benedictionem a Domino, et misericordiam a Deo salutari suo. Haec est generatio quaerentium eum, quaerentium faciem Dei Jacob.

About Domini est terra

Jacob Handl's motet Domini est terra is a powerful setting of Psalm 23, with verses also drawn from other Psalms. This Latin sacred work, scored for double SATB choir, explores themes of divine dominion over the earth and the qualities required to ascend the Lord's holy mountain. The text speaks of God as the founder of the earth and its inhabitants, and poses the rhetorical question of who is worthy to stand in His presence. It describes such a person as having clean hands and a pure heart, receiving blessings and mercy from God. The motet builds to a majestic climax with the invocation of the 'everlasting doors' and the declaration of the 'King of Glory' as the Lord, mighty and powerful in battle.
