Domine, si tu es

This motet by Nicolas Gombert sets a dramatic Gospel passage where Peter, stepping out onto the water to meet Jesus, begins to sink. He cries out for salvation, and Jesus immediately reaches out to him, questioning his lack of faith. Gombert's setting for SATB voices masterfully depicts the unfolding narrative: the initial boldness of Peter, his fear and panic as he sinks, and the gentle reassurance of Jesus. The Latin text allows the composer to explore the spiritual and emotional journey of doubt and reliance, rendered through the rich polyphony characteristic of the Renaissance motet.
