Dolcissimo sospiro by Giulio Caccini — Lyrics
About Dolcissimo sospiro
Giulio Caccini's Dolcissimo sospiro is a solo madrigal from the early Baroque era, a genre that moved towards greater expressivity and a more homophonic texture than its Renaissance predecessors. The solo soprano voice here is supported by a basso continuo accompaniment (not supplied in this edition). The text, in Italian, speaks of a sweet sigh that escapes from the beloved's lips, a sigh which the singer implores to soothe his bitter pain. He opens his heart to it, but laments that he is foolish to confess his suffering to a fleeting sigh that may well fly to another lover.
