Dolcissimo riposo by Vincenzo Galilei — Lyrics
About Dolcissimo riposo
Vincenzo Galilei, father of the famous astronomer, was a pioneering composer and theorist of the late Renaissance. This secular Italian madrigal for SATB voices exemplifies the genre's expressive qualities. The text, set with Galilei's characteristic harmonic language, speaks of sweet rest, the child of night and father of dreams. The poet implores this personified rest to return to their heart, which has been darkened and has not seen the light of day since. Galilei's setting captures the melancholic plea for respite from sorrow, creating a poignant musical experience.
