About Dolce nemica mia
Giovanni Gabrieli’s Dolce nemica mia is a secular Italian madrigal for double choir SAATTTB. It was written for occasions of refined domestic entertainment, a sophisticated blend of word-painting and musical exuberance. The text explores the complex emotions of love: the beloved is a ‘sweet enemy’, whose beauty has not yet inspired pity. Yet, hope prevails that desire will eventually align with the lover’s will, restrained by reason. The music reflects this tension, with moments of fervent expression contrasting with passages of thoughtful introspection. The piece concludes with a celebration of constancy in love, promising eternal joy as the reward for enduring hardship.
