Dolce mia vita by Luca Marenzio — Lyrics
Dolce mia vita e amara morte mia,
che l'un' e l'altra in voi ripose Amore,
deh vengavi pietà d'un che si more.
Occhi che serenar fatte le stelle,
con vostra luce Angelica serena,
deh vengavi pietà de la mia pena.

About Dolce mia vita
Luca Marenzio was a master of the Italian madrigal, and Dolce mia vita is a fine example of his work. This secular setting for treble, treble, and bass voices explores the paradox of love and death. The text, a lament from a suffering lover, pleads for pity from the beloved whose eyes, like stars, hold both celestial beauty and the power to inflict pain. The lover's tears and sighs are in vain against a heart of diamond, leaving them tormented. Marenzio's sensitive setting captures the pathos of the text, with the SSB voicing offering a particular blend of brightness and depth to this expressive plea.
