About Do you not know?
Thomas Morley’s setting of Do you not know? paints a vivid scene of Love blinded by beauty. The text describes how Love, gazing into the singer’s beloved’s eyes, lost his sight. These eyes are so radiant that they could revive the dead, but instead, they have deprived the singer of their heart. This secular madrigal for three voices (soprano, alto, tenor) explores the intoxicating, and sometimes painful, power of infatuation, a common theme in Renaissance part-music. Morley’s setting captures the dramatic narrative with expressive word-painting, characteristic of the genre.
