Dixit Dominus (1629)

Antonio Cifra's Dixit Dominus is a setting of Psalm 109 (110), one of the most important texts in the liturgy of Vespers. Written in 1629, it is scored for two SATB choirs, creating a rich, polychoral texture typical of the Venetian tradition. The Latin text, which speaks of God's power, kingship, and the eternal priesthood of Christ, is treated with dramatic contrasts and bold harmonic gestures. The double choir format allows for antiphonal effects, dialogue, and powerful tutti passages, ideal for a large sacred space and a substantial choral ensemble. Cifra’s work here exemplifies the grandeur and expressive power of late Renaissance/early Baroque sacred music.
