About Die Engel und die Hirten
Carl Riedel's Die Engel und die Hirten is a German sacred Christmas work for SATB choir. The text, drawn from traditional Christmas carol lyrics, recounts the angelic announcement to the shepherds and their subsequent journey to Bethlehem. It speaks of the birth of Christ the Lord, the saviour chosen by God, and the great joy that this news brings. The lyrics urge the shepherds to overcome fear, to see the promised child, and to spread the glad tidings. The piece culminates in exclamations of praise and the proclamation of peace on earth, honouring God. The music would surely reflect the wonder and jubilant nature of this nativity story.
