Diaphenia by John Gerrard Williams — Lyrics

Diaphenia, like the Daffdowndilly, White as the sun, fair as the lily; Heighho, how I do love thee! I do love thee as my lambs Are beloved of their dams. How blest were I if thou would’st prove me. Diaphenia, like the spreading roses That in thy sweets all sweets encloses; Fair Sweet, how I do love thee! I do love thee as each flower Loves the sun’s lifegiving power,

About Diaphenia

This delightful SATB setting of English text by John Gerrard Williams is a fine example of the English part-song tradition. The words, drawn from Francis Pilkington's 1605 collection, are a series of charming comparisons, likening the beloved Diaphenia to a daffodil, a lily, roses, and ultimately, to all things blessed. The composer captures the light, airy quality of the text, with the parts weaving together to express affectionate devotion, comparing the singer's love to the natural bonds of lambs and their dams, the dependence of flowers on the sun, and the birds' joy in spring. It is a secular piece full of warmth and sincere, if somewhat playful, adoration.
