Dialogo by Ruggiero Giovannelli — Lyrics

About Dialogo

Ruggiero Giovannelli composed this Italian secular madrigal for double SATB choir. The text presents a witty dialogue between the singer and Amor (Love). The singer cries out for Peace, but Love challenges them to war, reinforcing its arrows and weapons, and overthrowing all defenses. Love demands that if the singer wishes to disarm, Love must cease attacking. Otherwise, Peace itself should grant the singer courage, for when it is Peace, one should not be armed. The text concludes with a playful turn, suggesting it is time for lively eyes to abandon arms and wage war with kisses. This is part three of Del Giardino, a collection of madrigals published in 1605.
