About Di cosi nobil fiamma
Giovanni Andrea Dragoni, a composer of the late Renaissance, wrote this Italian madrigal for SSATB voices. Its text explores the passionate and conflicting emotions of love, where the singer experiences both joy and torment, exaltation and suffering. The poet describes a love that burns with such noble flame that the singer finds pleasure even in the pain it inflicts. The heart is set upon rare beauty and noble customs, and the poet accepts the consumption of that heart, finding happiness in the beloved, even as the love may lead to suffering or death. This secular part-song exemplifies the expressive and intricate style of the Italian madrigal tradition.
