Deus maiestatis

Francesco Stivori's motet Deus maiestatis sets a prayer for mercy in the face of divine majesty. The opening words invoke God as the king of all, surrounded by choirs of angels, with the whole world echoing his praises. The text then turns to a personal plea: 'Look upon me and have mercy on me.' This grand yet intimate Latin text is set for SATTB voices, allowing for rich harmonic textures and a powerful expression of devotion. The composer's skill in crafting devotional music is evident in his response to the profound spiritual yearning expressed in the words, making this a compelling choice for sacred services.
