Despierta, Bato by Ignacio de Jerusalem — Lyrics
About Despierta, Bato
Ignacio de Jerusalem was a significant composer of sacred music in 18th-century Mexico. This setting of a Spanish text, Despierta, Bato, is a villancico, a popular form of sacred choral music in the Spanish Baroque. The SAT voicing is well-suited to the jubilant, popular style of the villancico. The text, which presents a shepherd waking another, urges them to go to Bethlehem and offer gifts to the newly born Christ child, highlighting the humble origins of the celebration.
