Descendit hodie lux magna by Francesco Viola — Lyrics
Descendit hodie lux magna super terram
quia natus est nobis Dominus, et redemptor.
Vocabitur nomen eius admirabilis,
consiliarius, Deus fortis, princeps pacis.

About Descendit hodie lux magna
Francesco Viola's motet Descendit hodie lux magna is ideal for Christmas services. The Latin text announces the descent of great light upon the earth with the birth of the Lord and Redeemer. The music reflects the text's message of hope and peace, with the composer's masterful handling of the rich SATTBB and SATTBarB voicings. The words speak of the child's name, Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, whose everlasting reign will be established in justice and righteousness. Viola crafts a sonorous and profound setting, well-suited for liturgical use during the Christmas season.
