Descendit de caelis

This setting of a Marian antiphon is ideal for Advent or Christmas services. Dominique Phinot’s motet Descendit de caelis is for STTTB voices and sets a Latin text describing the Incarnation. The music follows the theological narrative: the Son of God descends from heaven, enters the Virgin’s ear, clothed in purple, and exits through the sealed gate, bringing light and glory to the world. The text continues with the image of Christ as a bridegroom proceeding from his chamber. Phinot’s rich five-part writing provides ample opportunity for expressive musical storytelling, capturing the wonder and mystery of this theological event.
