Der Wechsel by August Mühling — Lyrics
1.
Trüb und heiter tagt
unser Wechselleben.
Gleich und unverzagt
lasst hindurch uns streben;
denn zum Durchgang nur
ward des Lebens Flur
uns von Gott gegeben.
2.
Strahlt ein heit'rer Tag?
Freut euch stillen Mutes!
Türmt sich Ungemach?
Habt Geduld! bald ruht es.
Nichts ist tadellos;
auch das schlimmste Los
hat zugleich sein Gutes.

About Der Wechsel
August Mühling's Der Wechsel is a four-part German secular song for SSA choir. Its text explores the contrasting nature of human life, acknowledging both joy and sorrow as integral parts of our existence. The lyrics encourage resilience, urging listeners to face life's ups and downs with steadfastness and patience. It suggests that even difficult circumstances hold hidden benefits, and that material possessions and physical attributes require careful stewardship lest they become our masters. Ultimately, the song posits that both happiness and hardship are divinely ordained, meant to refresh the spirit and elevate the heart towards higher aspirations, freeing us from earthly concerns.
