About Der Glückliche, Op. 88, No. 2
The poet describes his beloved with bright, fresh eyes, comparing them to two candles. His heart, like a sunlit valley suddenly revealed in a forest night, or blooming wilderness reaching skyward, is as joyful and radiant as the world around him when she is near. The text expands to ponder the immeasurable nature of true love, likening it to the vastness of a view from a mountain to the sea, or a falcon calling to the distant earth. This is a secular SATB part-song for mixed voices, sung in German. Mendelssohn captures the fervent, expansive emotion of the text with rich harmonies and a flowing melodic line.
