The moon shines down as the speaker longs to see their beloved, fearing they might be lost forever. The text expresses anxious tenderness and the urgency of a midnight meeting, a desire to reassure the loved one that they will not be taken away. Brahms's setting for SATB voices captures this with its Romantic intensity.
