Der Abendhimmel I WAB 55

Bruckner’s Der Abendhimmel is a rich and evocative TTBB setting of a German text filled with romantic imagery. The music moves with a gentle, flowing lyricism, depicting the serene beauty of a starlit evening. As the poem progresses, the texture builds in intensity, mirroring the speaker’s growing ardour and desire to embrace his beloved, adorning her with moonlight and stars. This secular part-song is a powerful exploration of love and longing, crafted with Bruckner's characteristic harmonic richness and dramatic flair. The four male voices are employed with great skill, creating moments of both tender intimacy and passionate declaration, culminating in a fervent wish to die in ecstasy.
