DEO GRATIAS

When the Mass has ended and the congregation is ready to go forth, a joyful song of thanksgiving is exactly what the moment calls for. Odum Edward Ikenna’s "Deo Gratias" gives the choir a vibrant, layered way to sing that final praise. The title itself is the traditional Latin response for "Thanks be to God," and the English verses expand on that gratitude, praising God for His endless love, compassion, and the rain He sends from heaven.

The arrangement is highly engaging for the choir loft, moving through a series of expressive solos for tenor, soprano, and alto. After each soloist sings of God's goodness, the full choir answers with a steadfast refrain. As the piece progresses, it opens up into a lovely trio before settling into a rhythmic ostinato section. Here, the choir repeats a steady "Deo gratias, Amen" while a soaring soprano solo weaves "Alleluias" over the top, creating a bright and uplifting finish to the liturgy.
