About Den Uil
Alphons Diepenbrock’s Den Uil is a secular piece for SATB choir, setting a humorous Dutch folk text. The music opens with a sense of gentle storytelling, reflecting the whimsical narrative of an owl falling from a tree and seeking medical attention. The four parts weave together, sometimes in imitation, sometimes in homophony, to capture the slightly absurd events of the owl's misfortunes and subsequent, perhaps mock-solemn, funeral. The refrain, 'Van simmedondijne, van farilonla, den uil viva!', adds a playful, almost nonsensical flourish, underscoring the lighthearted nature of the song.
