Del breve viver mio

Perissone Cambio's Del breve viver mio is a secular madrigal for SATTB voices, likely composed in the 16th century. The music opens with a sense of introspection, the SATTB texture providing rich harmonic possibilities for expressing the text's melancholy. The composer uses the interplay of voices to convey the singer's lament about the brevity of life and the pain of unrewarded faith and hope. Despite the deep sadness of the words, the composer avoids excessive pathos, instead presenting a refined and elegant musical setting. The piece is a fine example of the Italian madrigal tradition, where the musical line serves to illuminate the text's emotional content.
