About Deh, perchè non è in voi
Maistre Jhan was a prolific composer of madrigals in the 16th century. This example, for six voices (SATTBB), is a secular Italian work from that tradition. The text laments the perceived lack of courtesy and pity in a lady's immortal beauty. It questions the glory and honour to be gained from a devoted servant losing his life for love of her. The poet urges the lady to change her thoughts and desires before old age diminishes her beauty, warning that she will regret lost time and a failure to reward such great faith.
