About De profundis (a 6)
Giovanni Gastoldi's De profundis is a sacred setting for six voices (SSATTB) of Psalm 130. This well-known penitential psalm, sung as a gradual psalm, expresses a deep plea for mercy and redemption from the depths of distress. The text begins with 'Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord', and continues with supplications for God to hear the voice of prayer, to forgive transgressions, and to offer redemption. Gastoldi's music would have provided a rich polyphonic setting for this important liturgical text, commonly used in Vespers services.
