About De profundis
Alexander Utendal's De profundis is a sacred motet for SATB choir, sung in Latin. It sets Psalm 130 (129), a penitential psalm often called the 'Gradual Psalm' or 'Song of Degrees'. The text begins with a cry from the depths, invoking God's mercy and pleading for a hearing. It moves from an acknowledgement of sin and the need for forgiveness to a hopeful reliance on God's promise of redemption and compassion. Utendal’s setting would have been intended for liturgical use, expressing profound spiritual reflection and supplication through rich choral textures.
