About De profundis
This setting of Psalm 130, De profundis clamavi, is ideal for Vespers services. Giovanni Legrenzi uses a double SATB choir, creating rich textures and opportunities for antiphonal effects. The Latin text, a plea from the depths for God's mercy and redemption, is treated with a grandeur befitting its solemn theme. The composer's skill in writing for divided choirs allows for moments of intimate supplication balanced by powerful declarations of hope and trust in the Lord's unending mercy.
