David's Victory by Robert Boyd — Lyrics

Sacred Dramas, 1782 1. Prepare! your festal rites prepare! Let your triumphs rend the air! Idol gods shall reign no more, We the living Lord adore! Let heathen hosts on human helps repose, Since Israel’s God has routed Israel’s foes. 2. Let remotest nations know, Proud Goliath’s overthrow: Fallen, Philistia! is thy trust, Dagon’s honor laid in dust! Who fears the Lord of Glory, need not fear The brazen armor, or the lifted spear.

About David's Victory

A vivid and dramatic setting of English words, David's Victory is conceived for SATB choir. The text, drawn from Sacred Dramas of 1782, recounts the triumph of David over the Philistines, celebrating the downfall of the idol Dagon and the routing of Goliath's forces. The music would suit occasions of celebration and victory, perhaps as part of a larger sacred dramatic work. The libretto speaks of the power of faith over earthly might, urging listeners to recognise that those who fear the Lord have no need to fear any earthly foe. The composer has captured the martial spirit and exultant mood of the narrative, painting a clear picture of the battlefield and the ensuing divine victory.
