Das schöne Wörtlein Sacrament by André Vierendeels — Lyrics
Das schöne Wörtlein Sacrament,
welches das vierd' Hauptstück fürwend?
bedeut hie nicht End oder Pflicht,
welchen in Krieg das Volck verspricht,
das er wolt stehn für gmeinen Nutz,
dem Feind aber bieten den Trutz.
Sondern ein Zeichen eigentlich
das Göttlich sey, doch sichtbarlich,
unsichtbarlicher Heiligkeit,
inwendiger Gerechtigkeit,
und über die Menschlich Nathur,
zu Gott erheb die Creathur.

About Das schöne Wörtlein Sacrament
This devotional German hymn for STB voices explores the profound meaning of the word Sacrament. The music unfolds with a clear, homophonic texture, allowing the message to take center stage. The text elucidates that a sacrament is not a mere promise or obligation, but a visible sign of God's invisible holiness and righteousness, transcending human nature. It emphasizes how sacraments shape the soul with virtue and remind us of the power of God's grace, likening the washing away of sin in baptism to being submerged in the spirit. The composer ensures the music reflects the sacred character of the text, offering a contemplative experience.
