About Darkness fell on the weary earth
Joseph Barnby's setting of Darkness fell on the weary earth is a moving sacred piece for SATB choir, suitable for Christmas. The English text powerfully contrasts the gloom and longing of the world with the sudden, joyous arrival of the "Light of Light" in Bethlehem. It describes the Star guiding the watchers to the "Marvellous Child, the Spring of Day", and culminates in a jubilant declaration of praise, with the choir joining the angels in greeting the Babe. Barnby's music captures the transition from darkness to radiant hope, making this a resonant anthem for the Christmas season.
