Dame liesse

This anonymous French chanson unfolds with a rich SATTB texture, creating a warm and resonant sound world. The interplay between the five voice parts offers considerable expressive potential for a choir. The text speaks of a plea to 'Dame liesse' (Lady Joy or Lady Gladness) to alleviate the harshness and insolence of 'rigueur' (rigour or harshness). The singer professes lifelong obedience and service, hoping for relief from suffering. The piece likely offers a beautiful opportunity to explore dynamic contrast and vocal colour, embodying the contrast between hardship and the longing for joy.
