Andrea Gabrieli's Da le Cimerie grotte is a secular Italian madrigal for SSAATB choir. The music opens with a sense of mystery and shadow, evoking the 'Cimmerian caves' and the 'horrors' of night from the text. The texture gradually unfolds, painting a scene where the dark air, earth, and night are rendered silent, and the world lies hidden in a tenebrous veil. A Siren then emerges, accompanied by Tritons, to sing a sweet harmony. The choir captures the shift from nocturnal gloom to this enchanting sound, as the text describes the Siren singing praises of the beloved's beauty, while a butterfly flies too close to a flame, a poignant image of fatal attraction.
