Benedetto Pallavicino was a prominent composer of madrigals in late 16th-century Italy. This secular work for SATTB voices is a fine example of the genre, with its intricate part-writing and expressive harmony. The Italian text, attributed to Giovanni Andrea Ugoni, explores the ardour of a lover's devotion. He describes how his heart was irrevocably captured by the beauty and gentleness of his lady, comparing her to all other women and finding them wanting. He declares his unswerving loyalty, stating that no prayer or tears can loosen the knot of love that binds him to her, and that his affections can never turn elsewhere.
