About Cum natus esset Jesus
Jean de Castro’s motet, Cum natus esset Jesus, sets a passage from the Gospel of Matthew recounting the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem. The SATTB, ATTTB voicing creates a rich, eight-part texture, allowing for intricate contrapuntal interplay and sonorous harmonic effects. The composer skilfully depicts the narrative, from the wise men's journey guided by a star to Herod's troubled reaction and his consultation with the scribes. The motet's Latin text, drawn from the Vulgate, captures the awe and political intrigue surrounding the birth of Jesus. This is a substantial and rewarding work for an accomplished choir.
