About Cum iocunditate
Nicolas Merques’s antiphon Cum iocunditate is written for three voices in unison (AAT). The Latin text invites us to celebrate the Nativity [or Visitation] of the most devout Virgin Mary with joy, so that she may intercede for us with the Lord Jesus Christ. The music follows the text, with flowing melodic lines and a clear, direct harmonic language, creating a mood of glad devotion. The relatively straightforward vocal writing and the repetitive Alleluia make this an accessible and uplifting setting suitable for many liturgical occasions.
