About Credo (Works no. 2)
Johannes Ciconia's Credo is a setting of the Nicene Creed for three voices (AAT). Composed in the late medieval period, this work reflects the sacred polyphonic tradition of the era. The text, in Latin, is a cornerstone of Christian liturgy, articulating core beliefs about God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Ciconia's setting, as part of a larger Mass structure, would have been sung as a declaration of faith within the context of the Mass. The voicing for two altos and a treble voice offers a clear, resonant texture, allowing the words of the Creed to be heard with particular clarity.
