About Cor mundum
The text of Cor mundum is drawn from Psalm 50, the great penitential psalm, in its Latin form. David, after his sin with Bathsheba, implores God for cleansing and forgiveness. The composer Francisco Valls sets these powerful words for two sopranos and two tenors (AATT). The text expresses a profound awareness of sin and a desperate plea for divine mercy and purification: 'Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.' The music, written in Latin, uses the contrapuntal techniques characteristic of canons, weaving the pleas for mercy into an intricate and moving texture. It is a moving sacred work from the Baroque era, suitable for liturgical settings or concert performance.
