About Cor mio, deh non languire
The opening words of this Italian madrigal plead with the heart not to languish, lest the soul languish with it. The text speaks of hot sighs, pity and desire, and a wish that by dying, the singer might give life to the beloved. However, it concludes that the heart unjustly dies, for it lives within another's breast. Salamone Rossi sets this passionate text for SATTB voices, crafting a rich and complex soundworld characteristic of Renaissance secular part-music.
