About Coppia rara e gentile
The words of Coppia rara e gentile celebrate a rare and gentle couple, bound by a faithful love. They express a wish that the sun has never seen their like, that time may never separate them, and that heaven may always fulfil their desires and grant them offspring who will preserve their happy memory for all time. This is a secular Italian madrigal for SATTB voices. The text is a beautiful, celebratory poem, and Meldert’s setting would have been intended for the sophisticated private entertainment of the Renaissance courtly class.
