Contendite intrare by Giaches de Wert — Lyrics
Contendite intrare per angustam portam, quia multi, dico vobis, quaerunt intrare et non poterunt.

About Contendite intrare
This powerful motet by Giaches de Wert, Contendite intrare, is scored for SAATTB voices. Set in Latin, the text is drawn from the Gospel of Luke and speaks of the urgency of seeking salvation. It warns that many will try to enter the narrow gate but will be unable to, and describes those turned away by the master of the house as workers of iniquity, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. The music would be fitting for a penitential season or a reflection on judgment.
