Congregati sunt by Philippe Verdelot — Lyrics

Congregati sunt inimici nostri, et gloriantur in virtute sua: contere fortitudinem illorum, Domine, et disperge illos: Ut cognoscant, quia non est alius qui pugnet pro nobis, nisi tu Deus noster.

About Congregati sunt

Philippe Verdelot's motet Congregati sunt is a powerful setting of a Latin text that expresses a plea for divine intervention against enemies. The text, taken from a psalm, describes adversaries gathering and boasting in their strength, and begs the Lord to break their power and scatter them, so that all may know that God alone is their protector and defender. The motet is written for a large six-part choir (SATTBB), offering rich harmonic possibilities. Its dramatic text and sonorous voicing make it particularly suitable for occasions requiring a strong sense of supplication and reliance on divine strength, perhaps during times of strife or communal challenge.
